Criminals are becoming smarter, and we need to become smarter too.
On the front line against financial crime
Financial Crime Prevention (FCP) is an area that may not always be the most visible, but it plays a crucial role for both the bank and society. For FCP Manager Cornelia Neuman, the work is about staying one step ahead, understanding new risks and continuously developing smarter ways of working.
FCP is about preventing, detecting and counteracting financial crime, such as money laundering, fraud and other attempts to exploit the financial system.
At Resurs, there is an FCP team driven by curiosity, quality and a desire to improve. Here, the path from idea to change is short, and employees’ input makes a real difference.
- If you want to join a team where you get the chance to influence, grow and contribute to something bigger, then you should come to us, says Cornelia.
That is also what makes FCP more than an administrative function: processes and requirements are part of the work, but at its core, it is about identifying risks, understanding behaviours and preventing the financial system from being exploited for crime. As the criminal economy grows and methods evolve, the work becomes even more important.
- You need to stay curious and want to understand what is happening in the world around you. Criminals are becoming smarter, and we need to become smarter too, says Cornelia.
An environment in constant motion
Change is a defining part of everyday life in FCP. New regulations, new products and new behavioural patterns mean that the team constantly needs to develop its ways of working. For someone who enjoys thinking outside the box and identifying improvements, there are great opportunities to make an impact.
At Resurs, FCP is closely connected to the development organisation. This means ideas do not have to stop at improvement suggestions; they can be translated into systems, processes and concrete change. Cornelia describes an organisation with short decision-making paths, where employees’ knowledge is put to good use.
- You might think that Resurs is a slow-moving and hierarchical organisation because we are a bank, but it is actually quite the opposite. Here, you are close to the decisions and close to change all the time.
A team that wants to move forward
One thing Cornelia keeps coming back to is how proud she is of her team. She describes a group with a strong team spirit, where people help each other, share knowledge and drive the work forward together. She especially values the initiative shown by employees who dare to raise ideas about how things can be done differently.
- So many new ideas for changes and improvements come from my employees. I think that is a wonderful mindset — wanting to keep getting better all the time.
For Cornelia, change has been a common thread throughout her career. She has worked in banking and financial institutions since she was 18, including at Ikano Bank and Fortnox, where she helped build the Anti-Money Laundering team that exists there today. Developing, improving and building on what is already in place is something that has always appealed to her.
Curiosity as a driving force
For anyone considering a future in FCP, Cornelia believes curiosity is one of the most important qualities. Wanting to understand laws, directives, supervisory decisions and global trends is central, but so is the ability to turn that understanding into practical work. It is about constantly trying to stay one step ahead. FCP is work where you identify real risks, contribute to society and help protect the bank, customers and the financial system.
- This is the most rewarding work you can do, and it is incredibly important. If you work in FCP and want to join a team where you get the chance to create change and where your input is put to good use, then you should come to us.
Fun fact:
Cornelia has a 70-square-metre allotment, and spends more time than you might think trying to keep the things she has planted alive.
